Discover Piteå’s Heritage
Step back in time and explore the rich cultural history and distinctive architecture of Piteå. The centerpiece of the history is Öjebyn (Piteå Gammelstad), a classic church town (kyrkstad) with a history dating back to the 17th century.
Norrbotten is home to Sweden’s best-preserved church towns, which are protected as cherished cultural heritage. Alongside nearby Luleå Gammelstad (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996), Öjebyn stands as one of the largest and most significant in the region. Historically, parishioners traveled vast distances across the region and stayed overnight in these red wooden cottages around the stone church. A traditional habit that continued well into the 20th century.
