Winter in Piteå
Piteå offers a truly magical winter experience in Swedish Lapland. Located along the coast, you find the islands of the archipelago, snow covered forests and it’s beautiful frozen lakes. In it’s charming city center you find local bakeries, restaurants and shops. Whether you are discovering Laplands wilderness around Piteå by snowshoe, dogsled or snowmobile, every path leads to a lasting, warm memory.
Good to Know: Preparing your winter holiday
How cold does it actually get in Swedish Lapland?
Winter temperatures in Piteå usually range from -5°C to -25°C. While that sounds intense, the ‘dry cold’ of the North feels much more comfortable than a damp winter elsewhere. We embrace the frost—it’s what makes the snow crunch and the Northern Lights shine.
What should I wear to stay warm?
The secret is the ‘three-layer principle.’ Start with thermal wool, add a warm mid-layer (fleece or wool), and finish with a wind- and waterproof outer layer. We go a lot more in depth on our “How to dress for winter” item on the Faq page.
What are the essentials I should pack?
Besides your layers, don’t forget high-quality wool socks, a warm hat that covers your ears, and insulated gloves. We also recommend a good lip balm and a power bank for your phone, as batteries drain faster in the cold.
Is Swedish Lapland suitable for children?
Absolutely! The North is a natural playground. Most of our adventures, like meeting the reindeer or shorter dogsled rides, are wonderful for families. We ensure a safe and paced environment where children can discover the magic of the snow at their own speed.
However, winter can be more tricky due to the cold temperatures. As a family with young kids ourselves, we draw from our own experience and recommend an adjusted program. This ensures the experience stays fun and safe for everyone—including both parents and children.
With a flexible program, we can easily stay out longer if everyone is having fun, or shorten the tour if we notice the kids are getting uncomfortable.
Do I need to be in peak physical shape for these activities?
You don’t need to be an athlete, but a sense of adventure and reasonable mobility help. Whether you’re on a sled or exploring the woods, we adapt our pace to the group. If you have specific concerns, just reach out—we’ll find the perfect fit for you.
