Winter & Spring: The White Wilderness

From December to April, Piteå is a winter wonderland. The landscape is dominated by thick snow and the spectacular frozen sea and lakes.

  • The Ice Road: Walk, skate, or use a kicksled on the frozen lake on the famous “Isbanan.”
  • Arctic Activities: This is the season for snowmobiling, dog sledding, and ice fishing.
  • The Aurora: Long, dark nights provide the perfect canvas for the Northern Lights to dance across the sky.

Summer: The Land of the Midnight Sun

In June and July, the sun never fully sets. Piteå is home to some of the best beaches in Northern Sweden, earning it the nickname “The Northern Riviera.”

  • The Archipelago: Explore hundreds of islands by boat or kayak. The brackish water of the Bothnian Bay is unique and refreshing.
  • Hiking & Nature: Discover the lush green forests and the roaring Storforsen Rapids, which are at their most powerful during the spring and summer melt.

September and October bring the explosion of red and gold in the trees.

  • The First Lights: As the nights grow darker, the Northern Lights return, often reflecting in the still, unfrozen waters of the sea.
  • Harvest Season: A great time for berry picking (cloudberries and lingonberries) and enjoying the crisp, fresh Arctic air.

Shops and Restaurants

Piteå’s walkable city center is anchored by Storgatan, Sweden’s oldest pedestrian shopping street. It brings together modern shopping malls, independent boutiques, historic bakeries, and fine dining.
