How to prepare

How to Prepare for Your Direct North scandinavian Adventure

We will provide you with all necessary information upfront, including your planned itinerary with starting times and tour durations.

When visiting Piteå, temperatures can vary, but will most likely be freezing (-5 up to -25). To ensure a safe and comfortable experience during our 3–4 hour outdoor activities, we highly recommend dressing according to the “three-layer principle” and bringing winter gear.

Essential Packing List: The Layering System

The key to staying warm is wearing multiple layers that trap air and wick moisture. Do not pack cotton—it holds moisture and will make you cold.

1. Base Layer (Closest to the Skin)

  • Thermal Underwear: Long-sleeved top and pants made from Merino wool or synthetic material (non-cotton).
  • Wool Socks: Several pairs of thick wool socks.

2. Mid Layer (Insulation)

  • Fleece or Wool Sweater: A warm fleece jacket, wool sweater, or down vest to layer over your base layer.
  • Fleece/Wool Trousers: Or thick leggings to wear under your ski pants.

3. Outer Layer (Protection)

  • Waterproof/Windproof Ski Clothing: A high-quality, insulated, and windproof jacket and ski/snow pants. This layer protects you from the wind and snow.

Accessories

  • Warm Winter Boots: Insulated, waterproof boots with thick, non-slip soles. Make sure they are roomy enough to wear thick wool socks without being tight.
  • Mittens: Mittens are much warmer than gloves as they allow your fingers to share warmth. Bring waterproof and insulated mittens.
  • Hat/Beanie: A warm hat that covers your ears.
  • Buff: Essential for covering the neck and lower face.

Other essentials:

  • Travel insurance
  • Travel documments
  • Adventure spirit!

Children

We believe this package is suitable for kids 8 years and older.

This recommendation is because we go out in colder temperatures and have longer activities (average 3–4 hours). Our cold limit is different for younger kids, simply because they are more vulnerable and most likely moving a lot less to keep their bodies warm.

If you are on holiday with younger children, please feel free to contact us. We have younger kids of our own, so we are familiar with going on snowy adventures with them. We do adjust our plans to the kids in combination with the weather. So, to be most flexible with younger kids, we can adjust the program to match your family’s wishes and children’s ages.
