Description

Experience the thrill of dogsledding in Piteå on a 12km dogsledding tour.  Our huskies are excited to meet you and take you on an unforgettable adventure through Swedish nature.

What to expect?

Upon arrival, we will welcome you into our wooden hut. When necessary we can loan you some extra clothing.
After a warm introduction, it is time to meet the stars of the show: our dogs. They are incredibly happy to share this adventure with you!

You will take a seat on the large wooden sledge (maximum 4 persons). Your guide will lead the team over frozen lakes and through the Swedish forests. During the tour, you can witness the power of the dogs, experience the breathtaking nature, and ask our musher anything about the dogs, the environment, or life in the North.

Halfway through, we will take a short break in the forest—the perfect moment to take some photos and enjoy nature. After the break, the journey continues as we glide from forest landscapes back onto the frozen lakes.

After the tour

When we return to the kennel, you are invited to help us take care of the team. We will give the dogs a drink and some well-deserved attention, which of course includes plenty of cuddles. There is also plenty of time for more photos with your favorite dogs.

Optional

You can extend this experience with a traditional lunch in the wooden hut or an outdoor lunch. The lunch in de wooden hut will be before of after the tour, where you will be served a dish prepared above the fire.

Taste Swedish Lapland: Our Open-Fire Lunches

At Direct North, we believe that an incredible meal can be a great addition to your adventure in all seasons. There is something deeply magical about stepping out of the crisp Arctic air and sitting down to eat a warm dish. Whether we gather inside a cozy wooden grill hut or cook together along trail, we love sharing the authentic flavors of Swedish Lapland with you.

We are proud to work with local producers, hunters, and fishermen. Our menus highlight the very best of our region’s natural pantry, featuring wild moose, tender reindeer, freshly caught local fish or local picked mushrooms and berries.

    What’s on the Menu?

Depending on the adventure you choose, your lunch will be a unique experience tailored to the environment:

Dogsledding: Cozy Fire in the Wooden Hut

Before or after your husky tour, you will step into our warm wooden hut to enjoy Suovas. This is a traditional Sámi delicacy of lightly smoked reindeer meat, thinly sliced and fried over an open fire. It is served hot with soft flatbread and a lingonberries—the ultimate Arctic comfort food.

Snowmobiling, Ice Fishing & Snowshoe Hikes: Outdoor Cooking

For our trail tours, we prepare your meal partly or fully outdoors. There is nothing quite like watching your lunch sizzle on a griddle directly over the campfire, surrounded by snow-laden pine trees and the quiet majesty of the winter forest.

Storforsen Waterfall Tour: A Feast by the Rapids

On our tour to the spectacular rapids of Storforsen, a fully prepared open-fire lunch is already included in your booking. We will gather at the dedicated fire sites near the nature reserve to cook a hearty, traditional meal over the flames, surrounded by the dramatic scenery of Europe’s largest unregulated rapids.

    Important Info for Your Booking

    Included vs. Add-On

Our Storforsen Tour and mushing day has lunch included in the price. For all of our other tours (including our dogsledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and snowshoe hikes), a traditional lunch can easily be selected as a possible add-on during your booking process.

    Dietary Requirements & Allergies

We want everyone to enjoy our local cuisine safely! If you have any allergies or dietary restrictions, simply let us know when you book. We will make sure your meal is safely prepared and just as delicious.Want to add a lunch to your booking? If you have already booked a tour and would like to add an open-fire lunch experience, just send us an email and we will happily customize your itinerary!

A Swedish Tradition: Fika is Included!

If you choose not to add a lunch to your tour, don’t worry. You will get a taste of Sweden, anyway! In Sweden, we have a sacred daily ritual called Fika (the beloved Swedish coffee break), and we love sharing it with our guests.

A time to breath, take in the surroundings and ask many questions a fike break is already included (except with dogsledding 5km-12km).

    What is a Swedish Fika?

It is more than just a quick snack. It is a moment to slow down, warm your hands, and chat about the adventure so far. During our mid-tour breaks, we will serve:

    • Warm or cold Drinks: Freshly brewed local coffee, tea, juice or a traditional hot wild berry juice (a local favorite!).
    • Sweet Treats: A delicious Swedish pastry, cake, or local snack to give you a quick boost of energy.

    Always Adjusted to Your Needs

Just like our lunches, we believe everyone should be able to enjoy a cozy fika safely. Whether you are gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, or have specific food allergies, we will happily adjust the snacks and drinks to match your dietary needs.

Friendly Reminder: Please let us know about any allergies or dietary restrictions when you book your tour so we can have the perfect, customized treats packed and ready for you!

What kind of food is served for lunch?

We are proud to serve authentic, local food that reflects the culinary heritage of Swedish Lapland.

    Our signature lunch include:

    • Suovas (for Dogsledding): A traditional Sámi specialty of lightly smoked reindeer meat, sautéed over an open fire and served in soft flatbread with wild lingonberries.
    • Trail Cooking (for Snowmobiling, Ice Fishing & Snowshoeing): Meals prepared partly or fully over an open fire like a stew, grill sausages or pancakes.

When you have booked an entire holiday inclduing meals, we make sure we do not repeat any dishes. This way you have the possibility to try and experience different flavours along the week.

Where do we eat our meals?

It depends entirely on the weather and the tour! We always prioritize your comfort and safety while ensuring you get an authentic taste of Lapland.

Depending on the conditions, your lunch will be served in one of three settings:

    • Beautiful Wooden Grill Hut: For our dogsledding tours, we have a gorgeous, traditional wooden hut available. It is the perfect, warm retreat where you can sit comfortably, escape the winter chill, and enjoy a relaxed, seated lunch around a fire.
    • Out on the Trail: If the weather let us, we love to eat directly out on the trail! Swedish Lapland has a wonderful scenic grilling spots, open-fire pits, and wind-shelters. Our guides know the absolute best spots with the most beautiful views to pause, build a fire, and cook.
    • A Cozy Local Restaurant (Our Weather Backup): While we love outdoor dining, safety and comfort always come first. If the weather turns exceptionally harsh—such as extreme cold or pouring rain—we will pivot to a local restaurant along our route instead. We carefully select partners that match the quality of our tours so you can still enjoy a fantastic, meal in complete comfort.

Is food or Fika included in the price of my tour?

    Fika is included

    • A cozy Swedish fika (coffee, tea, hot berry juice, and sweet treats) is fully included in the price of almost all our tours.
    • Because these dogsledding runs are focused entirely on the thrill of the trail, a formal fika break is not included during the tour itself. However, you are of course warmly welcome to grab a cozy cup of hot coffee or tea at our base camp either before we head out or right after we return!

    Lunches

    • For our Storforsen Waterfall Tour and mushind day, a lunch is already included in the price.
    • For our other tours (dogsledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing), lunch is not included but can easily be booked as a paid add-on.

Can you drive a car on the roads during winter?

Yes you can! All renatal cars are equipt with good winter tires to drive on the roads. the roads are maintained very well. Ofcourse you always need to keep an eye out for wild animals and icy conditions.

But something very unique and cool thing driving in winter is that you can drive on the ice. In our area you have special ice roads for cars. These roads are usually opened at the end of January or the beginning of February. They lead into the archipelago, which means you are driving on the sea! This is a highly recommended experience. Check out the current state of the ice road: Ice road in Luleå

Dirk Co-Founder of Direct North

Dirk

Founder, Guide and Musher

“As someone in tech the Arctic outdoors give me more balance. Making me more present, moving with the seasons, and enjoying nature.”

My background is in design and website development, but since moving to Sweden, the natural world has taken a much bigger part. It’s not about escaping technology, but about finding a healthier rhythm. Outdoors is where I recharge. whether that’s learning the skills of the forest, steering a dog sled through snow, or simply being outside with our family. My wife (Monica) and I feel incredibly fortunate to raise our kids in this environment. Living here has brought us so much fulfillment. And it’s rewarding to be able to welcome guests to experience this way of life.

Monica

Founder, Guide and Musher

“Watching our daughters grow up in nature taught me that the best moments happen outdoors. My goal is to give every guest that same sense of wonder.”

My heart has always belonged to animals and the great outdoors. My youth was spent chasing adventure like hiking the French Alps, canoeing, snowboarding, and downhill mountain bike trails with my brothers. When I combined my education in animal care with a dog sledding internship in Swedish Lapland 14 years ago, I found my true calling. That passion quickly became my way of life.

Today, co-running Direct North with my husband (Dirk) and raising our three daughters in nature is my dream realized. Becoming a mother gave my love for the outdoors even greater depth. Seeing our children explore, discover, and grow outdoors reminds me daily of how special this connection is. My biggest drive is sharing that same magic, freedom, and authentic nature experience with everyone who joins us.

Additional product information

Is dogsledding suitable for children?

Yes, dogsledding is a wonderful experience for children! Kids usually fall in love with the huskies instantly, and our friendly dogs absolutely love the extra attention and cuddles.

However, because the Arctic winter requires extra care for the little ones, we have a few important guidelines to ensure everyone stays safe and warm:

The Perfect Tour for Little Adventurers

For families with younger children, we highly recommend our 5km Dogsledding Tour. Sitting still on a sled can get very cold, and because children lose body heat faster than adults, a shorter tour is the perfect way to experience the magic without getting uncomfortable.

Age Recommendations

Children are very welcome on our standard tours from the age of 2 and up. If you have a child younger than 2 years old but still want to experience dogsledding, please contact us directly! We will do our best to find a customized, safe solution for your family.

Weather conditions

Your family’s safety and comfort are our top priorities. If the weather conditions on the day of your tour are too rough or cold for children, we will reach out to you beforehand to find a good solution for the entire family.

Can you drive your own team of dogs?

Yes, but it depends on the tour you book! At Direct North, we offer two different ways to experience the magic of dogsledding in Piteå:

  • Riding as a Passenger (Dogsledding 5km and 12km): On most of our regular tours you get to sit back and take in the stunning snowy landscapes. While you are comfortable on the sledge our experienced guides will share fascinating insights about the dogs. How the team works together and the local surroundings.
  • Driving Your Own Team (The Mushing Day): If you want to feel the thrill of steering the sled yourself, you can book our exclusive Mushing Day. This tour is carefully structured to make sure you feel confident and safe:
    • First Half: You will start the day riding as a passenger. During this ride, your guide will explain exactly how to drive the sled and what important signs to look out for on the trail.
    • Lunch: We will head back to enjoy a lovely lunch cooked over the open fire in our wooden hut.
    • Second Half: After lunch, it is your turn to step onto the runners and be a real musher!

Safety & Age Requirements

Please note that there is a minimum age requirement for the Mushing Day tour. Additionally, the safety and well-being of our guests, guides, and dogs always come first. If weather or trail conditions create an unsafe situation, our guides are obligated to adapt the program to provide a fitted, safe solution for everyone.

Do the dogs really like pulling the sled?

They absolutely love it.  Our dogs are born and bred to run; it is in their DNA. You will see their incredible enthusiasm the moment we start harnessing them—they bark, jump, and cannot wait to get moving. The moment the brake is released, the barking stops, and they settle into a focused silence. Our dogs are beloved members of our family, and their health and happiness are our top priorities.
