Description
As the Pite River turns into a waterfall and thunders through the snow-covered landscape, you’ll experience a unique contrast between the rushing water and the surrounding frozen forest. This tour is perfect for those who want to see Storforsen—the “Great Rapid”—up close and learn about nature.
What to Expect on Your Adventure
We begin by picking you up directly from your accommodation in Piteå. From there, we take a comfortable drive through the Lapland countryside toward the Storforsen nature reserve.
When you arrive, your guide will lead you through well-maintained trails to the waterfall. As you stand on the viewing platforms feeling the mist from the rapids, your guide will share fascinating insights into the area’s history, local wildlife, and intriguing facts about the roaring water.
After exploring, we’ll find a sheltered spot in the forest where we will light a campfire. There, you will enjoy a freshly prepared outdoor lunch and a warm drink in the peaceful wilderness. Of course, no Swedish adventure is complete without a traditional “Fika”—coffee and a sweet treat by the fire.
With satisfied appetites and cameras full of memories, we will drive you back to your door in Piteå, leaving you with the lasting impression of the powerful Swedish wilderness.

How To prepare
Clothing: The Power of Layers
Dress warm but with layers! Snowshoeing is an active sport, and you will likely get warm during the activity. The key to staying comfortable is managing moisture and temperature.
- Base Layer (Next to Skin): This is the most crucial layer. We highly recommend wearing a good first layer made of polyester or merino wool. These technical fabrics help with moisture transport (wicking). This means that if you sweat, the moisture is pulled away from your skin, preventing your body from cooling down too quickly.
- Insulation/Mid-Layer: Bring a fleece jacket or a light puffy jacket to wear over your base layer.
- Shell/Outer Layer: Wear a waterproof and windproof jacket and pants. This protects you from the winter elements.
💡 Extra Tip: Bring an extra layer (like a spare fleece or a down jacket) in your backpack. During our break, you will usually cool down rather quickly, and this extra layer will help you stay warm while stationary.
Footwear: Proper Winter Boots
- Leave your sneakers and fashion boots at the hotel room!
- It is essential to wear proper, insulated winter boots. This will keep your feet warm and dry, which is important for an enjoyable hike.
- Our snowshoes are designed to fit over most sturdy winter boots, allowing you to walk comfortably over thick layers of snow.
- Don’t forget warm wool or synthetic socks!
If you prefer to take something to drink:
Think about using a thermos. This will keep your water from freezing. In regular water bottles, the water will most likely freeze in cold temperatures.
Children
We believe our storforsen tour is suitable for children aged 8 years and older.
This recommendation is because we walk through snow and be outdoor. From the age of 8, a child’s interest is usually higher, and they can be involved in activities like making a fire, for example.
If you are on holiday with younger children, please feel free to contact us. We would be happy to discuss the possibility of a private tour. With a private tour, we can easily adjust the timing and pace to your family’s needs, ensuring everyone stays happy throughout the tour. With younger kids we would advise the use of a child carrier, so they can rest and perhaps try only small parts.
