Moose Safari

In Sweden, the moose (älg) holds royal status, that is why they are also called the king of the forest. There are about 300,000 to 400,000 moose roaming the Swedish woods, making it one of the densest moose populations in the world.

For Swedes, the moose is a part of the culture, within hunting and also watching the moose migration on television. Despite their massive size (a large bull can weigh up to 500 kg), they are incredibly quiet.

Moose in Piteå

The coastal forests and wetlands surrounding Piteå are prime moose territory. In the pine woods near areas like Grisberget or the valleys around the Pite River (Piteälven), moose find the perfect mix of shelter and food, feeding on willow twigs, birch branches, and pine needles. During the deep winter, it is not uncommon for locals to spot them standing quietly at the edges of the plowed country roads or crossing the frozen rivers.

We include a moose safari as part of our exclusive Photography Week, as capturing the “King of the Forest” in front of your lens is always a dream for our guests! Because wild moose are incredibly elusive and tricky to track down, we do not offer this as a standalone, separate tour. Instead, we treat it as an exciting bonus experience during our photography week.
