Because Piteå is located just south of the Arctic Circle , it does not experience the very dark polar night where the sun remains completely below the horizon all day. However, its winter days are still incredibly short, with the sun hanging very low on the horizon.

The amount of daylight you will experience during the winter in Piteå varies by month:

  • December
    • about 3,5 hours of daylight
    • With the shortest day around December 21st or 22nd.
  • January
    • about 5 hours of daylight
  • February
    • about 8,5 hours of daylight

Daylight is the time the sun above the horizon. Luckliy during the darker days, we get treated by the beautiful glowing skys in blue, purple and pinks or with northern lights.
