Do I have to be afraid for the brown bear when I am out hiking?
The short answer is no, you do not need to be afraid. But you should absolutely be aware and respectful.
While there are plenty of brown bears living in the forests of Swedish Lapland and the Norrbotten region surrounding Piteå, encountering one is incredibly rare and an aggressive encounter is rarer still.
A Swedish bear’s absolute primary goal when it hears, sees, or smells a human is to run away and hide long before you even realize it was there. In fact, most locals who have spent their entire lives hiking and hunting in Piteå have never seen a wild bear face-to-face.
When Do Bears Become Dangerous?
Bears will only act aggressively if they are startled or backed into a corner. Almost every rare bear incident in Sweden involves one of three specific scenarios:
- A surprised bear: A hiker walking silently into the wind accidentally stumbles right into a bear sleeping in thick brush.
- A mother with cubs: A mother bear instinctively defending her young cubs.
- An injured bear: A bear that has been wounded during the autumn hunting season.
Simple Rules to Stay Safe While Hiking
You don’t need to carry bear spray (in fact, bear spray is illegal to carry without a specific permit in Sweden). Instead, just follow these simple wilderness habits:
- Make a Little Noise: You don’t need to scream, but don’t walk through the forest. Talk out loud to your hiking partner or let your footsteps be heard. If a bear hears you coming from 100 meters away, it will quietly walk in the opposite direction.
- Keep Your Dog on a Leash: This is the number one cause of bear confrontations in Sweden. An unleashed dog will run ahead, find a bear, bark at it, get scared, and then run right back to its owner with an angry bear chasing it. Keeping your dog close protects everyone.
- Watch the Wind: If you are hiking through very thick brush or berry patches where visibility is low, make extra noise, especially if the wind is blowing in your face (meaning the bear downwind can’t smell you coming).
- Be Careful at Dawn and Dusk: Just like moose, bears are most active when the sun is low. Take extra care during twilight hours.
What should you do if you actually see one?
If you are incredibly lucky (or unlucky depeding on how you see it) enough to spot a bear, do not run (running triggers their predator instinct to chase, and they can run at 50 km/h).
Simply stand tall, speak in a loud, calm, normal human voice so the bear realizes exactly what you are, and slowly back away the way you came. Give the bear a clear, wide path to escape, and it will almost certainly take it!

Where do we eat our meals?
It depends entirely on the weather and the tour! We always prioritize your comfort and safety while ensuring you get an authentic taste of Lapland.
Depending on the conditions, your lunch will be served in one of three settings:
- Beautiful Wooden Grill Hut: For our dogsledding tours, we have a gorgeous, traditional wooden hut available. It is the perfect, warm retreat where you can sit comfortably, escape the winter chill, and enjoy a relaxed, seated lunch around a fire.
- Out on the Trail: If the weather let us, we love to eat directly out on the trail! Swedish Lapland has a wonderful scenic grilling spots, open-fire pits, and wind-shelters. Our guides know the absolute best spots with the most beautiful views to pause, build a fire, and cook.
- A Cozy Local Restaurant (Our Weather Backup): While we love outdoor dining, safety and comfort always come first. If the weather turns exceptionally harsh—such as extreme cold or pouring rain—we will pivot to a local restaurant along our route instead. We carefully select partners that match the quality of our tours so you can still enjoy a fantastic, meal in complete comfort.

Our signature lunch include:
- Suovas (for Dogsledding): A traditional Sámi specialty of lightly smoked reindeer meat, sautéed over an open fire and served in soft flatbread with wild lingonberries.
- Trail Cooking (for Snowmobiling, Ice Fishing & Snowshoeing): Meals prepared partly or fully over an open fire like a stew, grill sausages or pancakes.

It depends entirely on what you want to experience! A summer break in Swedish Lapland is the ultimate “coolcation”. The perfect choice if you want to escape the extreme heatwaves of southern Europe and instead enjoy comfortable temperatures, fresh Arctic air, and endless daylight.
Here is a breakdown of our summer months to help you choose the perfect time for your trip:
- June (The Midnight Sun & Midsummer): June is a truly magical month. This is when you can experience the famous Midnight Sun at its absolute peak, giving you 24 hours of daylight to explore. It is also the month of Midsummer, where you can join locals in celebrating one of Sweden’s oldest and most beloved traditions under a sun that never sets.
- July & August (Warm Days & Berry Picking): These are typically our warmest months, making them ideal for outdoor adventures. Around Piteå, this is the perfect time to discover our beautiful hiking trails, hidden swimming spots, and the stunning archipelago. Plus, from mid-July onward, the forest floor opens up foraging season, allowing you to pick delicious wild cloudberries, blueberries, and raspberries.
Local Tip: If you want maximum daylight and local cultural festivals, choose June. If you prefer warmer weather for swimming and foraging for wild berries, July and August are your best bet!

Is it worth visiting Swedish Lapland in summer?
Absolutley! If you enjoy nature and outdoor activities, you can visit Lapland (Piteå) in every season and it will be worth it. During the summer all nature is green, berries will start to grow and we are treated by the midnight sun. That means that the sun will not set or only for a short while, this make the days very long and unique.
Besides the hughes amount of hiking trails, Piteå also offer a lot of different areas to swim. Also the huskies are still around in the summer and are waiting for you to bring some cuddles.

Can it get to cold to be outside?
Usually the temperatures are between -10°C to -20°C. But it can happend that the temperatures get even colder then -30°C. How comfortable it is to do an activity outdoors also depends on the wind or the type of activity.
When we are preparing the tour we always check the weather this includes temperatures. If we think the temperatures are to cold for a specific activity we will cancel, move the tour to a different day or offer an alternative. Besides the temperatures we will also check the weather for snowsstorms and wind.
It is our job to keep it fun and safe for you.

However, because Lapland is massive and the animals are naturally shy, they don’t just stand on street corners waiting.
The probability of spotting the “King of the Forest” changes based on the following factors:
- The Time of Day

Depending on the conditions, your lunch will be served in one of three settings:
- Beautiful Wooden Grill Hut: For our dogsledding tours, we have a gorgeous, traditional wooden hut available. It is the perfect, warm retreat where you can sit comfortably, escape the winter chill, and enjoy a relaxed, seated lunch around a fire.
- Out on the Trail: If the weather let us, we love to eat directly out on the trail! Swedish Lapland has a wonderful scenic grilling spots, open-fire pits, and wind-shelters. Our guides know the absolute best spots with the most beautiful views to pause, build a fire, and cook.
- A Cozy Local Restaurant (Our Weather Backup): While we love outdoor dining, safety and comfort always come first. If the weather turns exceptionally harsh—such as extreme cold or pouring rain—we will pivot to a local restaurant along our route instead. We carefully select partners that match the quality of our tours so you can still enjoy a fantastic, meal in complete comfort.

Is it possible to travel by train to Piteå?
Not directly to Piteå but it is possible to travel by train towards Luleå. When you arrived in Luleå, a transfers can be arranged towards this area or you can travel by bus instead.
Can you drive a car on the roads during winter?
Yes you can! All renatal cars are equipt with good winter tires to drive on the roads. the roads are maintained very well. Ofcourse you always need to keep an eye out for wild animals and icy conditions.
But something very unique and cool thing driving in winter is that you can drive on the ice. In our area you have special ice roads for cars. These roads are usually opened at the end of January or the beginning of February. They lead into the archipelago, which means you are driving on the sea! This is a highly recommended experience. What kind of food is served for lunch?
We are proud to serve authentic, local food that reflects the culinary heritage of Swedish Lapland.
Our signature lunch include:
- Suovas (for Dogsledding): A traditional Sámi specialty of lightly smoked reindeer meat, sautéed over an open fire and served in soft flatbread with wild lingonberries.
- Trail Cooking (for Snowmobiling, Ice Fishing & Snowshoeing): Meals prepared partly or fully over an open fire like a stew, grill sausages or pancakes.
When you have booked an entire holiday inclduing meals, we make sure we do not repeat any dishes. This way you have the possibility to try and experience different flavours along the week.

Is dogsledding suitable for children?
Yes, dogsledding is a wonderful experience for children! Kids usually fall in love with the huskies instantly, and our friendly dogs absolutely love the extra attention and cuddles.
However, because the Arctic winter requires extra care for the little ones, we have a few important guidelines to ensure everyone stays safe and warm:
The Perfect Tour for Little Adventurers
For families with younger children, we highly recommend our 5km Dogsledding Tour. Sitting still on a sled can get very cold, and because children lose body heat faster than adults, a shorter tour is the perfect way to experience the magic without getting uncomfortable.
Age Recommendations
Children are very welcome on our standard tours from the age of 2 and up. If you have a child younger than 2 years old but still want to experience dogsledding, please contact us directly! We will do our best to find a customized, safe solution for your family.
Weather conditions
Your family’s safety and comfort are our top priorities. If the weather conditions on the day of your tour are too rough or cold for children, we will reach out to you beforehand to find a good solution for the entire family.

Can you drive your own team of dogs?
Yes, but it depends on the tour you book! At Direct North, we offer two different ways to experience the magic of dogsledding in Piteå:
- Riding as a Passenger (Dogsledding 5km and 12km): On most of our regular tours you get to sit back and take in the stunning snowy landscapes. While you are comfortable on the sledge our experienced guides will share fascinating insights about the dogs. How the team works together and the local surroundings.
- Driving Your Own Team (The Mushing Day): If you want to feel the thrill of steering the sled yourself, you can book our exclusive Mushing Day. This tour is carefully structured to make sure you feel confident and safe:
- First Half: You will start the day riding as a passenger. During this ride, your guide will explain exactly how to drive the sled and what important signs to look out for on the trail.
- Lunch: We will head back to enjoy a lovely lunch cooked over the open fire in our wooden hut.
- Second Half: After lunch, it is your turn to step onto the runners and be a real musher!
Safety & Age Requirements
Please note that there is a minimum age requirement for the Mushing Day tour. Additionally, the safety and well-being of our guests, guides, and dogs always come first. If weather or trail conditions create an unsafe situation, our guides are obligated to adapt the program to provide a fitted, safe solution for everyone.

Is the Northern light tour suitable for kids?
We believe our Northern Lights tours are suitable for children aged 8 years and older.
This recommendation is because our Northern Lights tours take place late in the evening, which often results in younger children falling asleep in the car. Additionally, the temperatures usually drop significantly in the evening/night. Since we spend most of the time watching the sky, it can be very cold for the children.
From the age of 8, a child’s interest is usually higher, and they can be involved in activities like making a fire, for example.
If you are on holiday with younger children, please feel free to contact us. We would be happy to discuss the possibility of a private tour. With a private tour, we can easily adjust the timing and pace to your family’s needs, ensuring everyone stays happy throughout the tour.

Why should we go on a Northern light tour?
Seeing the Northern Lights is more than just watching through your window or stepping outside for one minute. Even when there is a possibility of seeing the Aurora, it does not mean they are visible from every location or at every hour of the evening. Many factors play a role in whether you will see the lights from your current spot or the location you visit.
Your guide has the tools and experience to find the best location to watch this light show. Factors like light pollution, cloud coverage, and more will influence the guide’s decision to go to a specific place.
In addition to finding the right spot, your guide can change plans when necessary to increase your chances of seeing the lights. When sudden weather changes occur, your guide has the possibility to switch to a different location or decide to stay put. It is also possible that you will see more than just the Aurora, such as animal tracks or even a moose! Your guide will share information about all of these different subjects, ensuring it will most likely be a fun evening out with a great chance to see the Northern Lights.

With a flexible program, we can easily stay out longer if everyone is having fun, or shorten the tour if we notice the kids are getting uncomfortable.
